During a pre-launch audit for a custom site, I found canonical tags hard-coded to the staging domain (dev.site.com). Launching this way would have caused Google to de-index the live site as duplicate content.
I removed the hard-coded HTML and wrote a custom PHP function in functions.php. This function dynamically generates the self-referencing canonical tag based on the current live URL, ensuring 100% accuracy regardless of the environment.
